Understanding the Safety of Chiropractic Care

Written By Hope Chiropractic on May 14, 2018

People everywhere question the safety of chiropractic care because unless you know how it works, there is just something that can be unsettling about having your spine cracked.

After all, everyone knows that if you break your back, you could end up with significant nerve damage and those cracks sound scary, unless of course, you understand why and how chiropractic care is safe.

Chiropractic Care is a Safe Treatment Option

The safety of chiropractic care is important to your chiropractor as he or she would never suggest something that would put you in harm’s way.

One of the biggest misunderstandings about chiropractic care is regarding the way it affects your body and what it is used to treat.

Chiropractic care is drug-free, non-invasive, and treats joint pain, neck pain, back pain, among other pain complaints.

A study that was published in 2004 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics determined that traditional medical care is actually less effective than chiropractic care for the same pain issues.

Safety of Chiropractic Care vs. Risk of Injury

One of the more common things that chiropractors do is neck adjustment, or cervical adjustment, with the purpose of reducing pain and improving joint mobility.

Although this particular treatment is common, there is always a risk involved, but keep in mind that the risk is incredibly minimal.

According to evidence, only 1 case in 5.85 million adjustments results in any serious injury.

Common Questions Chiropractors Face

Chiropractors are often asked if chiropractic care is safe. The answer is yes, undoubtedly so, and with minimal risk.

They are also asked what can be treated with chiropractic care. The more typical issues that are addressed include headaches, neck pain, and lower back pain.

Another question that pops up frequently is regarding children and the safety therein. Generally speaking, seeing a chiropractor that has experience with children makes parents more comfortable, but otherwise yes, it is safe and gentle.
