How Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Text Neck?

Written By Hope Chiropractic on April 13, 2018

Do you ever feel like texting is a pain in the neck? In this case, it’s not just an expression, it’s a real problem that is facing millions today.

Chiropractic care can be an important part of neck pain treatment, especially when it comes to preventing the other common complications that can arise from text neck.

What is Text Neck?

What happens when you look down at your phone or your tablet?

You bend your neck, right?

Doing that too much is the cause of text neck. To explain it a little more, text neck happens when you use your neck, back, and shoulder muscles too much due to being in a hunched position from looking down at your phone.

The more you do it, the more strain you put on your spine and your muscles in that area.

They were never designed to be able to hold that position for the lengths of time people do it today, so the question becomes, well, what do we do about that?

How Can Text Neck Be Treated?

One of the first things you can do at home to work on text neck is to improve your posture and try to sit up straight as well as holding your phone in such a way that does not require you to look down at it for extended periods of time.

Keep a neutral spine to help from causing alignment issues as that will also help.

Your chiropractor will adjust your head to encourage proper posture, but it will take time. Text neck didn’t just happen suddenly. It took a long time to get that way so it will take time to make it go away.

What Happens If You Don’t Get Neck Pain Treatment?

Text neck is more serious than it sounds, but largely because of the amount of weight and pressure that gets placed on your spine where the base of your skull and spine meet.

You figure that your head weighs approximately 10-12 pounds. When you bend your neck, it puts around 60 pounds of pressure on your spine. If you add up all of the hours you spend looking at your phone, it is no wonder your neck is in pain.

Additionally, text neck can lead to pinched nerves and even herniated discs in your spine, all of which become even more serious the longer they are left untreated.
